You made this argument with ARM, too, chosing to use signed characters
by default there (...and behind door #3 is ... a performance penalty!).

Thumbing one's nose at established ABIs for the sake of (pointless, IMO)
consistency across totally unrelated platforms isn't really a good idea.

...but if you want to shoot yourself in the foot, then I suppose that's
your own business.
