OK, thanks Stan.  You OK-ed it a couple of weeks back too I think, but
because it was not just ObjC I was touching I wasn't sure whether I
needed an OK from elsewhere.  Joseph and others haven't complained at
either patch, and since the C bits are just moving code around I guess
I can say they're "obvious".  Since it shares more code it's certainly
not a step backwards even for C.  So I'll commit it.
