It really ought to be done soon, since changing debug formats
can show up obscure bugs -- typically compiler crashes.

Ideally, gdb would have been "known good", so we could clean
up bugs in the debug generation on the gcc side during the
bug-fix-only period coming up...

Mark, are you going to be release manager for 3.1 as well?
If so, what are your thoughts on making this change after
the Dec 15 feature freeze?
