Yep. Ideally, we should defer assembler tests to some point after the
assembler is already guaranteed to be built. This should be easier to
do with autoconf 2.50.

I'll soon summarize the known problems on Solaris in the
platform-specific installation instructions, and I'll mention this
problem.
