Yes, this is a good idea.  I would call the file `irix6-libc-compat.c'
or something; `hacks' doesn't explain well what's going on.

Not without special magic.  Or a clean-room rewrite.  Or determining
we don't need the copyright.

At the very least, we should add something to the release notes that
points to the patch.
