So, lemme get this straight. :-)
srcdir != objdir requires VPATH. (This we all know.)
We have to use GNU make in order to do srcdir != objdir.
We have to do srcdir != objdir because srcdir == objdir is fragile.
We can't require GNU make.
Constructing the header install rules by hand is evil. (This we all know.)
The install rules generated by automake make use of VPATH.
Except on Tuesdays, when it's raining.
