Could we add a TeXInfo comment in that file saying as much? Maybe point to
somewhere in the mailing list archives (e.g., your message)? That would
at least alert future maintainers that somebody who knows something about
the present scheme needs to have a look.
Anything's an improvement over leaving old documentation untouched, IMHO.
