There are known issues with all 2.2 kernels before 2.2.18 - it would
simply be silly to have to recreate the relevant patches. Since 2.4+ is
going to be the main place for future development, getting 2.4 working
with current GCC is more important than getting 2.2 working with it.
I have thought that there should be a list of secondary applications -
programs which are not counted as part of the release criteria, but have
often triggered bugs in GCC, or bugs in themselves when compiled with new
GCC. People would be encouraged to test such applications and report and
fix problems found, but without holding up the release for them. Linux
2.2.18 could go on such a list.
