Yup. :-( I verified that this little patch brings us book to bootstrap
land by a full build on FreeBSD 3.3.

I am even tempted to install this under the "obviously correct" rule,
especially considering Loren's detailed analysis, but hopefully someone
will look at this soon anyway.
