Sorry, but I ran out of time. I can live with your proposal. However,
given the current configuration scheme, can you actually tell if prefix
was supplied by the user or passed in from the top-level configure (eg.,
what happens if user supplies --prefix=/usr/local)?
Unfortuantely, the whole config stuff is what I'm least familiar with,
so I'm a bad person to ask.
For the moment, my suggestion would be to go ahead with your patch, but change
it so the default is unchanged from the current. Then we can make the
default a function of --prefix later.
