I think you should ask comp.lang.fortran (which I haven't read for a
few months now) for input. Personally, I tend to think that list-
directed output is a programmer's request to do some kind of "nice"
formatting, as defined by the *compiler*, and that if lined-up
columns are desired, formatted output should be used; but I'm not
exactly a Fortran jockey, and haven't consulted the standard(s) on
this question. E.g. there might be tons of code out there that
doesn't care a lot about the form of list-directed output *except*
that it line up array elements nicely....
