I think I took lots out when cleaning up the makefiles for egcs 1.1.
Can you explain why they need to be put back (with the consequent
maintenance headache)? Also, why specifically cater for Sun make, or
is this more general? Irix and AIX makes also won't work even for
builddir==srcdir IIRC, though perhaps that's been fixed recently.
[g77 runtime has never built with any non-GNU make we've seen for
builddir!=srcdir due, apparently, to differing VPATH semantics and we
used to issue a configure-time warning about it. Don't the GNU
instructions say somewhere that you need GNU make for this case?]
