Most people use nm from the GNU binutils.  The code in this case is
running nm -pg.  I don't have a copy of the elfutils.  What does the
elfutils nm print when using -pg?  For the GNU binutils nm, the -p
option is selects portable output and the -g option selects only
external symbols.
