I have downloaded a program called mcpp, which is apparently a c preprocessor that works.
./contrib/download_prerequisites; works okay.
./configure; works okay.

AKAIK, configure in the source tree is stringy discouraged and not well tested. Read the "Installing GCC: Configuration" again.
