Ian and Andrew have answered the malloc part, in terms of upgrading
gcc, the changes in each release are listed at:

http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.5/changes.html
Some of those changes (such as support for newer generations of x86
processors) might already be present in Red Hat's version of GCC 4.1.2
which CentOS uses.
Whether the new features are a reason to upgrade is only something you
and/or your software engineers can answer.
