Fixed in the SUSE LINUX 9.2 system compiler:

  % gcc -v

  gcc version 3.3.4 (pre 3.3.5 20040809)
  % gcc x.c -O ; ./a.out
  -1343238496
  % gcc x.c -O2 ; ./a.out
  -1343238496
