First, sorry for not reducing the test case further.

Second, here's the way to reproduce it:

  type, abstract :: bcd_t
    contains
    procedure(bcd_fill_halos), deferred :: fill_halos

    subroutine bcd_fill_halos(this)
      import :: bcd_t
