Yes, switching away from the gold linker and rebuilding gcc solves the problem!
OK that's what I'll do.
I'm not sure if this should be considered resolved or if it counts as a bug for
binutils. Does --enable-gold cause gcc to change its behavior?
Shouldn't the standard libs be built with -flto?
