So it was - and it was me that reported it in bug 36837. (in this case, I'm
building with a Gentoo 4.3.3 compiler)
As you can see (amongst the noise) in the other bug, I was able to reproduce
the bug using fsf gcc-4.3.1 to build a mainline compiler (and I've confirmed
that it still happens with the head of the gcc-4.4 branch and mainline).
