I'm lost, obviously I don't know what I'm doing.  Anyway, both make or 
make bootstrap failed this morning with a fresh gcc (same ice as above)

What do you mean by
"But to bootstrap a new compiler you should not use
   mainline from 20050813 - 20050815."
