Color me an idiot. Sorry to disturb. After two days of googling on
this, believe it or not I never caught this. Nor the bug in bugzilla
(looks like some time with search terms is in order for yours truly).
Certainly,
CFLAGS="-fno-zero-initialized-in-bss -g -O2" ./configure ....
worked like a charm.
I'll go home now, tail appropriately tucked.
