    Does your version of GNU as support the flag -xarch=v9?
    as --help will tell you.

    If so, can you try the steps similar to the ones:
    http://gcc.gnu.org/install/specific.html#sparcv9
    except try:

    CC="gcc -Wa,-xarch=v9" srcdir/configure [options] [target]


    If not, upgrade to the latest snapshot of binutils from
    http://sources.redhat.com/binutils/ and try it.
