Yes, this always puzzled a little bit me too. I do not have an answer to your question, right now.

Great! (so to speak) We have found the source of all your problems. It is *well* known that 2.50
does'nt work well with 3.0.x, a patch for the mainline (3.1) went in just a few days ago, and the
problems manifest itself *exactly* as you reported.
Downgrade to 2.13 and, by the end of the day, you will have your 3.0.3 in perfect shape.
