State-Changed-Why:
Your change is not in the ISO C++ standard.
libstdc++-v3 which comes with gcc 3.0 follows the ISO C++
standard very closely.
Please consult a book such as:
"The C++ Standard Library: A Tutorial and Reference" by Nicolai Josuttis
or
"Standard C++ IOStreams and Locales: Advanced Programmer's Guide and Reference" by Langer and Kreft
to better learn how to use the ISO C++ Standard IOStreams
library.
