Thanks for this reply. Rest assured that your hard work is really
appreciated.  Please note:

[1] Both bugs reports were assigned to "unassigned". Some sort of standard
    explanation should be sent automatically to make it clear that
    "unassigned" does not imply that the bug report has been sent into a
    black hole ...

[2] Searching through the database, I found a that a similar bug was
    reported and closed shortly before 3.0 was released. The developper
    assigned to it was nathan@gcc.gnu.org. Assuming that he should be
    more knowledgeable about the nature of the problem than "unassigned",
    I CC'd him in the second bug report (for 3.0.1) (he was not on the
    first one (for 3.0))... 

[3] Using the web based bug reporting system I uploaded *both*
    the preprocessed and the assembly code. Apparently, the system
    can only handle one attachement file ...  even though the language
    "Add a file attachment:" seems to imply that one can *add* multiple
    files.
