gcc 3.0.1 make distclean fails

make distclean fails in gcc 3.0.1 with make 3.79 on [gnu/]linux
2.2.14-5.0 (red hat 6.2), after configure --prefix=/usr/local/gnu
--enable-languages=c,c++. Here is the error:
make[3]: Entering directory `/usr/local/gnu/src/gcc-3.0.1/i686-pc-linux-gnu/libstdc++-v3'
make[3]: *** No rule to make target `multi-clean'. Stop.
