Which configuration do you mean, --enable-threads=posix or without
threads?  I've been testing with --enable-threads, FWIW.  My opinion
is that it should be enabled by default.

You mean libgcj, right?  GCJ itself knows almost nothing about the
threading model, AFAIK.
