I guess we can blame it on FreeBSD make, then :-) :-)

Hardly. I've got remote guest access to a couple of FreeBSD boxes at
the univ or Utah, and I promised I wouldn't do much more than building
GCC weekly snapshots once. Besides, there's no way reasonable way to
do Makefile debugging at this network-wise distance :-(
Anyway, this is likely to be the same bug in FreeBSD make that some
user of Amanda reported a while ago.
