David was using gcc 2.95.X as installed as the default system compiler
for FreeBSD-4.1.
By the process of elimination, I can confirm that this bug is now
known to be either in local-system patches (i.e. never in the FSF code
base) or solved on both the post-2.95.2 branch and the mainline.
