I fully expected you had approval; I was just curious who I was
disagreeing with. :-)

OK. That strongly suggests that my suggested fix, or perhaps that
plus a call to `fold' is the right fix. I'll try to play with this
later today. Your fix is probably OK for the branch, so it's not too
critical whether we get this fixed before the 6PM deadline today. I
*think* it will just cause us to miss some error messages.
