My system is the same up to here (except for the kernel updates), and
1.1.2-pre3 built without problems using either of those compilers.  The
testsuite worked the same as everyone else got with gnulibc1, except for my
g77 failure on the cabs compile at -O0.

I used libc-5.44.  It didn't work with the original i386-redhat library.
