egcs-CVS19980818, cplus-dem.o not built in gcc dir, bootstrap fails

When bootstrapping the egcs trunk checked out today (19980818)
on alphaev5-dec-osf4.0b, sparc-sun-solaris2.5 and mips-sgi-irix6.2
(probably any platform) using gnu make-3.76.1 and SRCDIR == BUILDDIR,
I get an error linking collect2. Here's the result on the alpha:

 > cc -DIN_GCC -g -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DHAIFA -o collect2 collect2.o tlink.o
 > hash.o cplus-dem.o underscore.o version.o choose-temp.o mkstemp.o
 > obstack.o -lmld
 > ld:
 > Can't open: cplus-dem.o (No such file or directory)
 > make[2]: *** [collect2] Error 1

I checked and cplus-dem.o was created in the libiberty
directory, but never got built in the gcc directory.

I'm not sure why this happens.
