Build failed in separate directory

On HP C110 hpux 9.05, I created a subdirectory in the egcs-1.0.1 directory
named build/hpux-9.05 and ran ../../configure --with-gnu-as from there. Then
I executed make LANGUAGES="c c++ f77 gcov proto" bootstrap. During the build,
I got the following error output:

gcc -c  -DIN_GCC    -g  -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DHAIFA    -I. -I/usr/local/pkg/egcs/egcs-1.0.2/gcc -I/usr/local/pkg/egcs/egcs-1.0.2/gcc/config /usr/local/pkg/egcs/egcs-1.0.2/gcc/cp/g++spec.c
gcc  -DIN_GCC    -g  -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DHAIFA  -o g++ g++.o g++spec.o version.o \

gcc  -DIN_GCC    -g  -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -DHAIFA    -I. -I/usr/local/pkg/egcs/egcs-1.0.2/gcc -I/usr/local/pkg/egcs/egcs-1.0.2/gcc/config \
-DSTANDARD_STARTFILE_PREFIX=\"/usr/local/pkg/egcs/hpux/lib/\" -DSTANDARD_EXEC_PREFIX=\"/usr/local/pkg/egcs/hpux/lib/gcc-lib/\" -DDEFAULT_TARGET_VERSION=\"egcs-2.90.27\" -DDEFAULT_TARGET_MACHINE=\"hppa1.1-hp-hpux9.05\" -DTOOLDIR_BASE_PREFIX=\"/usr/local/pkg/egcs/hpux/\" \
-DLANG_SPECIFIC_DRIVER -c g77.c

make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp_mnt/usr/local/pkg/egcs/egcs-1.0.2/build/hpux-9.05/gcc'

By manually making the link from gcc.c in the source dir to g77.c in the build
dir, I could continue the compile.
