grepping on the lyxfunc.C file I found only one inline function declared 
(which is used 40 times in the code) and  no templates. Looking closer at 
the code I observed that there is a really big switch(action) {...} statement,
with about 200 case labels (don't know it this has connections with the problem).
BTW I tried to compile the same file with standard gcc (with optimizations)
and the memory footprint was normal (like egcs without optimizations)...
