We also have a newer gcc installed, (gcc-2.7.2) and it also
has the same problem
All versions of gcc will have this problem.
The normal way to solve this problem, where GNU as is incompatible with
the native assembler, is to create a separate configuration file and use
it when --with-gnu-as is specified. It is a bit funny in this case because
both assemblers are GNU as, but I think it could still work if it was
documented well enough.
In general, gcc/binutils/et al don't work as well as they should with
FreeBSD/NetBSD/etcBSD because they use archaic versions of most GNU utilties.
I suspect that they will eventually upgrade to newer versions (particularly)
if they switch to ELF), at which point these version related compatibility
problems will mostly go away.
