What's interesting about autoconf is there hasn't been a release in a
long time -- and Cygnus has made several fixes which may (or may not)
be important for egcs. So that might argue for having it in the
repository.
The good news is apparently there is a new maintainer, so maybe
a new autoconf release would happen relatively soon...
Just more tidbits...
