In article <Pine.LNX.3.96.971227194701.345F-100000.cygnus.egcs.bugs@tardis.home.dave> you write:
>Configure had picked up: alphaev56-unknown-linux-gnu as host

>/tmp/cca08064.s: Assembler messages:
>/tmp/cca08064.s:4: Error: Unknown pseudo-op: `.arch'
Ack, I meant to post a message about this before Jeff made a new release...
In response to a number of macro needs $at when noat in effect "bug"
reports, I'm now forcing people to upgrade from broken gas when using
any of the instruction set extensions.
The .arch pseudo-op is supported as of 2.8.1.0.18 as found at
ftp://ftp.yggdrasil.com/private/hjl/
or in a binutils snapshot at
ftp://ftp.cygnus.com/private/gas/
It should be trivial to upgrade since you've got rh5 installed already.
