I originally reported being unable to compile egcs 1.0 on mklinux-ppc.
Although I had compiled binutils 2.8.1.0.18, I am still learning how unix
behaves, and did not realize that the updated versions of as, ld, etc. were
placed in /usr/local/bin, when the system looks for them in /usr/bin. After
renaming the old version of the binutils and creating symbolic links from
/usr/bin to /usr/local/bin, egcs compiled flawlessly. The error I thought I
was encountering was human, not binary. Thank you to all for your
suggestions.
