Re: shared libbfd on i486-pc-linux-gnulibc1

   Date: Wed, 19 Nov 1997 15:21:00 +0100 (MEZ)
   From: Michael Taeschner <Michael.Taeschner@dlr.de>

I tried to build the gas-970915.tar.gz snapshot on:

   i486-pc-linux-gnulibc1 (SuSE-Linux 4.4.1, upgraded from 4.3)
   gcc-2.7.2.3.f.1 (i486-linux-gnulibc1) (gcc-2.7.2.1 i486-linux available)
   binutils: gas 2.7; BFD 2.7.0.3
   libc.so.5.4.7
   ldd: version 1.8.3

   with

   $ ./configure -v --enable-shared --prefix=$HOME

Building the binutils with --enable-shared has not really been
debugged since I switched everything over to libtool and automake. I
believe the particular problem you are mentioning was fixed on Oct 1.
However, there are other problems.

These problems will, of course, be fixed before the next official
binutils release.

I need to stress that anybody who uses gas snapshots does so at their
own risk. They are not supported in any way; in particular, they are
certainly not as well supported as the egcs snapshots. If you run
into problems, please be prepared to analyze and fix them yourself.

Also, please do not report bugs in the gas snapshots to bug-gnu-utils.
The last thing I need is for people who are not developers to start
picking up the snapshots and reporting bugs about them without being
prepared to fix them themselves. Bugs in the gas snapshots should be
reported to bfd@cygnus.com and/or gas2@cygnus.com. These mailing
lists are open to all binutils developers; send a note to bfd-request
and/or gas2-request in order to join.

If the egcs documentation recommend gas snapshots, please add some
comments along the lines of the above.

If you are using Linux, I recommend using H.J. Lu's binutils releases,
which he tests for Linux only. The version 2.8.0.15 that you mention
is one of his release numbers.

Thanks.

Ian
