Re: Lahey Fortran .eq. gfortran

Did anybody know that they were going to do this?

I did - kind of. John Appleyard of Polyhedron wrote me in February 2012 that Lahey was considering to base their compiler product on GCC/gfortran+gdb as Fujitsu have stopped the development of their compiler. And he wanted to get a comment; well, I replied - and didn't get any further email. Until February 20, 2013 when he wrote that they are at release-candidate stage. (I somehow have missed that email.)

Whilst a Visual Studio GUI will do great things for the gfortran user base, I wonder if they have thought to provide some assistance for the development of gfortran either by directly supporting a developer or, at very least, getting users to help out with bug reporting?

I assume that they will at least help by submitting bug reporting as that's is in mutual interest. I think they focus(ed) on the integration with Windows (Visual Studio 2012 Shell), which is not directly related to gfortran and gdb. Now that their first Lahey/GNU Fortran release is out, they might have more time looking at other issues; but only the future will tell, to which extent they will directly contribute to the development of gfortran.

In any case, it is useful for Windows developers to have access to a gfortran-based compiler which fully integrates into Visual Studio.

Anyway, it is a great endorsement of our efforts.

Indeed.

Tobias
