I agree that continuing with OOP (and F2003 generally) is a higher priority
than co-arrays (and F2008 generally), but I hope the co-array stub
implementation suggestion of Tobias remains a consideration.

I would be very interested in participating and adding input from the user
perspective. The co-array stubs idea is a perfect example where user input
might have an impact. As someone working on an open-source project with a
broad user base, it's valuable to be able to add a feature that will be
extremely attractive to users of one compiler (g95) without breaking the
code for users of another compiler (gfortran). Stubs are very valuable in
this regard.
