this is such a non-portable and unique issue.
IMHO, how it works now is fine.

I wasn't intending to weigh in, but it looks like the Fortran committee gave this the best of their thinking. I'd be a little reluctant to see a feature where the default std=gnu produces different results from the Fortran standard.
