I'm not sure how it works with gcc, but cross compiling usually prevents
run-time tests from being run at configure time. So the compiler could
possibly be underoptimized.

But why not set up a 32bit environment (compiler and necessary
libraries) on the x86_64 boxes? The compiler and kernel usually support it.
