compiling f77 and 64-bit arithmetic

Hello,
I want to compile Tough2, which is written in f77. My question is if I best should use the g77 or if gcc is fine? And do you know how I have to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit arithmetic (thus double precision).
Do you know someone compiling Tough2 (a reservoir simulation tool) with gcc, so that I directly can contact her or him?
Thanks,
Alexandra
