I'm OK with committing this to mainline if for no other reason than
to get more wide spread testing.  Anyone else have an objection?

I agree - I tested stage 1 extensively and found that the code, whilst more verbose, was less myterious. BTW has the PR that I found was fixed with the patch been squelched? Stage 2 came at the wrong time so I have not looked at it. Nevertheless, like you, I trust the team behind it.

One more item: a Big Thank You to Jakub, Richard, and Diego!

PS I have, to my surprise, developed, over the lunch break, a fix for PR 19546, which is down to one regression. It might even fly this weekend....
