BTW, my patch exposes another problem with the now (in)famous
char_result_11.f90 tests.

Excuse my ignorance, why is this famous? You'll note that I have had to make #s 1,2 and 8 compliant with the standard.

I'll supply a patch and testcase later today. Need to run to little league (ie kid's baseball).

Even on this side of the pond, we know what little league is - have fun.
