I am with Steve on this. I would suggest libgfortran and libg77. This way the new library libg77 can be used for other things that crop up.

But then, the option should not be -frecord-mark-g77 but -fg77-io. Although I don't understand the need for a separate library. Couldn't different routines in the same library do the same trick? Obviously, the less libraries involved, the better.
