Description Lars Kristian Lundin 2006-07-26 13:38:58 UTC
The options -Wformat -Wmissing-format-attribute causes the
warning: function might be possible candidate for `printf' format attribute
for a call to vsnprintf() even though its prototype already
has the printf format attribute.

This is observed with the
preinstalled gcc 4.1.0 on SUSE Linux 10.1 (AMD64) and with a
manually installed gcc 4.1.0 on Scientific Linux 4.0 (Xeon) (and also with the
preinstalled gcc 3.2.2 on Red Hat Linux 9.0 (i686))
with this command:

gcc -save-temps -c vsnprintf_one.c -Wformat -Wmissing-format-attribute

The vsnprintf_one.i produced on Scientific Linux is pasted here:

Comment 1 Hallvard B Furuseth 2007-01-13 18:40:23 UTC
The warning is a bit misleading,
  "function might be possible candidate for 'printf' format attribute"
means the _calling_ function might be such a candidate, not the function
being called on the line it warns about.

The warning is still spurious in this case though, and gcc could tell that:
A function cannot be such a candidate if it has a prototype without variable
arguments. Here is another example of such a spurious warning:

Comment 2 Bernard van Duijnen 2010-04-04 15:08:31 UTC
The message may be unclear, but is in itself correct.
Your function vsnprintf_one needs an annotation because
its first argument is a format string that can be checked itself
to be a valid format. As there are no arguments to compare to, the
first-to-check should be zero.

static void vsnprintf_one(char *self, va_list arglist)
   __attribute__ ((format (printf, 1, 0)));

OK, I see that the warning is misleading, because it points to the call of vsnprintf instead of pointing to vsnprintf_one.

ttest.c: In function ‘vsnprintf_one’:
ttest.c:826:5: warning: function might be possible candidate for ‘gnu_printf’ format attribute [-Wmissing-format-attribute]
     vsnprintf(self, 2, "%c", arglist);
     ^

Same thing with the other members of the vprintf family of functions, such as vfprintf... I remember getting particularly confused by this one in the past and hacking together some really ugly workarounds to deal with it, when all I really needed to do was to put the format attribute on the calling function, instead of trying to re-declare vfprintf...

Retitling to clarify

The option is called now -Wsuggest-attribute=format
